Florida residents were closely following a fleet of Russian warships as they passed near the state's coast on their way to Cuba, using online services to track their movements, according to a report by the Miami Herald. The proximity of the Russian Navy ships to the US shores "enchanted" Americans, the article states. Maps, obtained from various services, started to circulate on American social media shortly after the Russian ships were spotted approximately 30 miles off Key Largo.
The report suggests that the Russian ships could have disabled their tracking systems, but they chose not to. The publication believes that the sailors did so to avoid the risk of accidental collisions with commercial vessels in the area. "The proximity of the (Russian Navy ships) to the US southern coast fascinated many people on social media, although the information being spread was sometimes exaggerated or inaccurate," writes the Miami Herald.
It is worth noting that a group of ships from the Russian Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy arrived in Cuba for an unofficial visit this week. The group consists of the frigate "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov," the nuclear-powered underwater missile cruiser "Kazan," the medium sea tanker "Akademik Pashin," and the rescue tugboat "Nikolai Chiker." The frigate and the submarine are equipped with modern high-precision missile weapons, including hypersonic "Zircon" missiles.
